Townshend Acts (1767)
The Townshend Acts were a series of laws passed by the British Parliament in 1767 that imposed new taxes on goods imported into the American colonies, such as glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. These acts were named after Charles Townshend, the Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time, who believed that the revenue generated from these taxes would help pay for the expenses of governing the colonies. However, the Townshend Acts were met with widespread resistance and protest from the colonists, who saw them as a violation of their rights and as a form of taxation without representation. The acts ultimately contributed to the growing tensions between the colonies and Britain, leading to events like the Boston Massacre and the eventual outbreak of the American Revolution.
